1. No crank or No Start
This is the most common symptom that correlates to the bad starter. The reason behind this is due to the internal electrical issue, either the starter solenoid switch is not functioning or the brushes are in the starter worn out and unable to pass the current through the commutator to get the starter turning.
2. One click Sound
The click noise that can be heard while cranking, it's a solenoid activating the plunger to move the pinion gear outward to mate the flywheel ring in the abnormal or a crashing manner, this could be the reason why the starter is making the click sound while starting.
3. Slow Crank
The reason behind for the slow cranking could be the poor contact between the brush and the commutator and it is restricting the right amount of the current needed to produce the motor full torque to turn the engine.
4. Starter Running but not the engine
Basically, we could hear the starter free spinning some time, this happens if the starter turned on but the pinion gear is not moving out to connect the flywheel or flex plate to the engine. The reason behind this could be the faulty solenoid switches.
5. Grinding noise while cranking
The reason behind this could be the damage of pinion gear or ORC(Overrunning Clutch), if it is defective when in motion with the flywheel or flex plate it will make a grinding noise, most importantly before concluding the starter make sure to check the batteries are in good condition and the connections are free of free of corrosion.
The above are the common symptoms of faulty alternators, it is recommended to contact the nearest technician when these symptoms occur.
